Amniocentesis

If you have a family history of genetic abnormalities such as Down's syndrome, cystic fibrosis, or spina bifida, or your blood shows a high or exceptionally low AFP (alpha-fetoprotein) level, you will be offered an amniocentesis usually at around 16-18 weeks. This test is also offered to all women over 35 years of age because they have a higher risk of having a Down's syndrome baby. Guided by ultrasound scan, a long hollow needle is inserted through the wall of the abdomen and the uterus to draw out a sample of amniotic fluid. This is then tested for abnormalities. You will get the results in about four weeks. The test carries a small risk of miscarriage.
