Hi all. My name is John and my wife has severe depression. This has affected her for many years and is now at the point that it is (probably has) destroyed our marriage. Prior to marriage I got her to promise to get help, but after the ceremony she decided she no longer has a problem. She spends most of her time miserable and anything can cause her to blow up. Mentioning the depression in any form results in an explosive situation.
I am at the point where I don't know if I can go on and am hoping to learn more of depression and ways I can hang in there for her. Though it has begun to affect my health. |

Hi John, welcome to the forum. I hope you can find some help and information here. I'm not sure what advice I can give you about your wife, other than to remind her that she promised she would get help, and she hasn't yet fulfilled that promise. Let her know how it's affecting you. If she's bipolar, I think she might benefit from medication. But the first obstacle would be for her to acknowledge and accept the diagnosis, because if she denies her problem, she is likely to give up on the medication, or refuse to take any at all. Good luck...

Thank you. It helps some to be able to see and read these forums. Other than that I don't know what will help. I have a message in to the family doctor and am hoping to speak with him and see if he has any suggestions. I am also looking at diet changes and such that I can make on the sly. Other than that it is a waiting game at this point to catch the swing where we can actually talk about it.

Hello lost husband,
Welcome to the depression forum. I see you love your wife a lot and a lot concerned about her health and your future life. Here is an article which can guide you on what you can do as a family of close relative of a depressed person. http://www.depression-guide.com/depression-support.htm -------------------- I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.

QUOTE(lost husband @ Nov 1 2006, 09:15 AM) Hi all. My name is John and my wife has severe depression. Hi John, I very sorry about your situation. I'm here to find some help dealing with my husband. I have become so frustrated and sad that I don't know what to do. Because we have young children it makes it even harder. I'm not sure if you and your wife have any children yet, but you may want to wait until she is better before doing so. It's breaks my heart to see other dad's outside playing and laughing with their kids. Good luck to us. Hope we can get through this difficult time. |
