Male erectile disorder (ED)

Male Erectile Disorder Overview, Cause, Symptoms, Treatment, Medication

Inability to gain an erection or inability to maintain an erection once it has occurred. Male erectile disorder (ED), the inability to reach or sustain an erection,is a prevalent condition affecting the psychological well-beingof millions of U.S. males, their families, and their prospective partners.

If a male is unable to maintain an erection throughout sexual activity, he may have male erectile disorder. This problem must be either persistent or recurrent in nature. Also, the erectile disturbance must cause difficulty in the relationship with the sexual partner to be defined as a disorder. Erectile disorders may accompany a fear of failure. Sometimes this disorder is present throughout life. In many cases the erectile failure is intermittent and sometimes dependent upon the type of partner or the quality of the relationship.

Erectile dysfunction can effect a man at any age. It effects men in heterosexual relationships, men in homosexual relationships, and single men. The possibility of erectile dysfunction increases as men get older.

Recurring inability to achieve or maintain an erection until completion of the sexual activity. Must result in significant distress for the individual and is not better accounted for by another disorder (e.g. drug abuse) or physical diagnosis.
