Uses of Citalopram hydrobromide:
Citalopram hydrobromide is used to treat patients with major depressive disorder. It is not for use in patients with bipolar (manic depressive) disorder as it can exacerbate mania or cause a rapid swing from the depressive to the manic phase.
Citalopram hydrobromide is also used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), though it is not FDA approved for this diagnosis.
This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
How to Take Citalopram hydrobromide:
Take this medicine as directed. It can be taken with or without food. It may up to 4 weeks to reach full effect, but you may see symptoms of depression improving in one to two weeks. Do not stop taking this medicine abruptly without consulting with your doctor.
Citalopram hydrobromide Side Effects:
Some common side effects reported with Citalopram hydrobromide medicine include:
- Nausea,
- dry mouth,
- somnolence,
- increased sweating.
- Insomnia,
- dizziness,
- diarrhea,
- fatigue,
- tremor,
- anorexia,
- ejaculation disorder.
Warnings and precautions for Citalopram hydrobromide:
- Not to be used concomitantly with an MAO inhibitor. Allow at least 14 days to elapse between stopping an MAOI and starting Citalopram hydrobromide or stopping Citalopram hydrobromide and starting an MAOI.
- Talk with your physician or pharmacist if you are taking other medications.
- Citalopram hydrobromide is not addictive, but abrupt discontinuation may cause withdrawal. Doses should be tapered off when Citalopram hydrobromide therapy is discontinued.
- Citalopram hydrobromide can cause drowsiness or trouble thinking in some people. Patients should not drive or operate heavy machinery until they know that Citalopram hydrobromide does not affect their ability to safely engage in these activities.
- Studies on this medication have only been conducted on adults, and the effects of Citalopram hydrobromide in children below the age of 18 have not been established.
- Studies indicate that Citalopram hydrobromide can increase the risk of birth defects when taken by pregnant women; the doses used in these studies were higher than normal therapy doses.
What to do if you take Overdose of Citalopram hydrobromide?
Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center.
What to do if you take Missed Dose of Citalopram hydrobromide?
Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How to Store Citalopram hydrobromide:
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of the reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.
