Abdominal Epilepsy

     

Abdominal epilepsy is a kind of gastric and intestinal disturbances. It is a rare condition consisting of gastrointestinal disturbances caused by epileptic seizure activities. Common clinical symptoms of abdominal epilepsy contains but not limited to abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, and diarrhea with headache, confusion, and syncope.

The pain is in upper mid abdomen is intense and is quite abrupt in starting. Usually it lasts for a few minutes only but it may recur several times a day for a continuous period of several days.

Symptoms of Abdominal Epilepsy

  • In abdominal epilepsy, there is a state of altered consciousness (disorientation or confusion) during attacks usually ending in a deep sleep.
  • Abdominal pain
  • The aura which is common in certain types of epilepsy
  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Prtial or complete loss of consciousness with interruption of awareness.

Treatment of Abdominal Epilepsy

Primary treatment for epilepsy is directed at eliminating the nervous system incoordination in the abdomen. Castor oil packs, massage and diet were some of the therapies which can be used to prevent Abdominal Epilepsy.

Abdominal epilepsy is usually treated with anticonvulsant medication. When the diagnosis is seriously considered, neurological consultation is required. If the healthcare professional is not aware of abdominal epilepsy, this diagnosis is easily missed out which results in unsuitable treatment.
