What do you mean by Clonic Seizure?

     

A seizure that cause repetitive twitching and jerking movements of muscles on both sides of the body is known as clonic seizure. Clonic seizure lasts for 2 to 3 minutes. Clonic seizures is very rare, arise mainly in young children. Patient may lose his/her conscious for some period of time. Sometimes if clonic seizure move step forward it may become generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Many times child having neurological problem do have repeated movements which is misunderstand as clonic seizure. Contraction and relaxation of muscle are not stop by restraining or repositioning.

What are the sign and symptoms of clonic seizure?

  1. Rhythmic twitches or jerking movements of muscle occur.
  2. Bowel and bladder control may be lost after seizure.
  3. Breathing of patient may become abnormal or may stop.

How is the diagnosis made?

Video-EEG (Electroencephalogram) is used to diagnosis clonic seizure. Clonic seizure is not followed by tiredness and confusion which is usually happen in tonic-clonic seizure.

Treatment for Clonic Seizure

  • Start mouth to mouth breathing (CRP) if child does not  breathing for more than one minute.
  • Avoid injury by removing obstacles from child path.
  • Rare occurrence of seizure may stop after some time but if it occur repetitively then prolonged treatment must required.
