About Temporal Lobe Seizure

     

Temporal Lobe Seizure occur because of abnormal electrical activity caused in an area of the brain which is known as the temporal lobe. Temporal Lobe Seizure is a type of complex partial seizure as it is related to one part of the brain. simple partial seizures(without loss of awareness ) and complex partial seizures (loss of awareness ) are seizures associated with Temporal Lobe Seizure. Duration of seizure is 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

What are the sign and symptoms of temporal lobe seizure?

  • An unusual emotion or,sensation known as an aura experienced by some patients which acts as warning.
  • Lip-smacking, Chewing or swallowing
  • After seizure difficulty in speaking and confusion may occur.
  • Repetitive movements, such as picking at clothing

What are the causes of temporal lobe seizure?

  • Abnormal electrical activity starts in the brain.
  • Head injury,infection such as encephalitis or meningitis, high fever, exposure to certain drugs
  • Lack of oxygen
  • Blood vessel malformations in the brain
  • Stroke
  • Brain tumors
  • Genetic syndromes

What are the treatments of temporal lobe seizure?

  • Most commonly used AEDs are carbamazepine, phenobarbital, valproate and phenytoin.
  • Vagus nerve stimulation.
  • Surgery is next option if anti-seizure drugs fails.
  • Before surgery you have to go through magnetic resonance imaging.
