Flunarizine: Uses and side effects
TweetFlunarizine is one of the latest calcium antagonists with 'proven' anti-migraine effect. Prevents cell damage due to calcium overload by selectively blocking the entry of calcium into the cells of tissues. It has been found to inhibit the contractions of vascular smooth muscle and protected blood cells from membrane rigidity and protect brain cells from the effects of hypoxia.
Flunarizine Indications
Prophylaxis of classical and common migraine.
Dosage of Flunarizine
Adults: 10 mg at night; below 40 kg: 5 mg.
Flunarizine Contraindication
Pregnancy and lactation.
Special precaution while taking Flunarizine
Drowsiness may occur and patients should not drive or operate machinery.
Pediatrics: reduced dose necessary
Pregnancy: contraindicated
Lactation: contraindicated
Elderly: Use with caution.
Side effects of Flunarizine
Drowsiness, weight gain, headache, depression, gastric pain, dry mouth, insomnia and extrapyramidal reactions.
Flunarizine Drug interactions
Plasma level reduced by phenytoin, carbamazepine, valproic acid.
Sometimes crying or laughing
are the only options left,
