Work life balance and the balancing act

     

I am Melissa Mayor staying in Houston, Texas in an upscale urban setting. If you ask about my background, I am post doctorate in Behaviour Sciences and I am the head of personal behaviour and functioning team at one of the premier life sciences institute. Besides my career, I have my own personal life which includes my partner of 9 years, Richard Mayor who is an investment Banker based out of Houston again. I am mother of a 6 year old kid, Brandon, who just started his primary education journey. I have another little one at home, Jason, who is just 6 months old.

Does this sound familiar to your situation? Let me continue further. I have my boss who is a person of great personal repute and respect in his peer group. He supports me in my tasks at work. My husband is most of the time with his clients, often spending 60 hours a week on his projects.

And now the kids, who are the most wonderful part of my life, are not always on their best behaviour. They are naughty like most of the kids and do all what they can to get my attention and love.

I normally feel the best when I am working out at least a few times a week. Most of the times I am juggling with spin, Power Yoga, or Salsa. The logic is to get back to pre pregnancy shape as soon as possible.

I can say if you are reading so far, we have a lot in common and the working-mother lifestyle I am reading is nothing unique. Just to say some facts, there are now a record number of households, 40% to be exact, where the women are primary breadwinner. Does this come with stress, well you judge it for yourself. You have your boss, your clients, your husband and your child, whom you have to satisfy in whatever possible ways and at the end, do whatever you can in the leftover time for yourself.

My daily life story is similar to millions of working women, or working parents precisely. Do you agree with me that multi-tasking is the only thing which can help me in accomplishing these out of world yet very common routine. Well, I thought so, initially and followed it judiciously, till the time I am failing every time.

What experts say about Balancing Multi Tasking?

Now let me present some facts from the renowned Stanford Psychologist and author Clifford Nass, who has spent his career knowing and researching the cognitive and psychological effects of multi-tasking. According to his research, you are not saving time by multi-tasking. Actually you are wasting it and missing the answer to your problem because you are no more in focus of your thoughts and deeds.

The things if I put in simple perspective, when you have two or more tasks which you trying to complete at once, you are bound to flounder and neither task will get full focus. What you end up is taking more time or maybe completing the task with considerable errors. You should try focusing one thing at a time. Whether you are at work, or in the car, or at home, just take one thing in stride at one time.

Think the Balancing Act with the pinch of salt and things will become easier for you and the success will be attainable.
