 Borderline Personality Disorder Cause

The etiology of borderline personality disorder is not known. Biological investigations suggest impairment of neuropsychological function and dysfunctions of specific neurotransmitters and electrophysiological mechanisms. Some of the cause of BPD are as follows:

  • Brain Chemistry: It is caused by a dysfunction of the Limbic area of the Brain, which controls emotion. The neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin, acetylcholine, and norepinephrine may be involved. Linehan theorizes that borderlines are born with an innate biological tendency to react more intensely to lower levels of stress than others and to take longer to recover. They peak "higher" emotionally on less provocation and take longer coming down.
  • Genetic Factors: Genetically mental illness is the trait, not a particular disorder. Dr Markovitz has estimated that the rate of transferring down the mental illness gene is around 7%.
  • Environmental Factors: Early environmental influences (anything from long-term isolation for an early infectious disease to severe physical or sexual abuse).
  • Triggers that bring on symptoms (such as divorce or adolescent traumas).

Aetiology of borderline personality disorder

Conflicting results have come from studies of the prevailance of borderline personality disorder among the relatives of probands with this disorder (Dahl 1993), although a high rate of affective disorder has been reported in the relatives (Stone 1980). Taken together, these results are not convincing evidence for an improtant genetic component of aetiology. Psychoanalytic theory propose a disturbed relationship with the mother at the stage of individuation of the child (Kernberg 1975). In keeping with this idea, people with borderline personality are more likely than controls to report physical and sexual abuse in childhood (Berelowicz and Tarnopolsky 1993), although prospective studies have not been reported. Paris (1994) has suggested a multifactorial aetiology, with adverse childhood experiences acting on a so-far-uncorfirmed genetic predisposition.

Borderline Personality Disorder Symptom - A person with BPD may experience intense bouts of anger, depression, and anxiety that may last only hours, or at most a day.

Borderline Personality Disorder BPD - is a serious mental illness characterized by pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior.

Borderline Personality Disorder Medication and Treatment - Pharmacological treatments are often prescribed based on specific target symptoms shown by the individual patient.

Test for Borderline Personality Disorder - Data from the first prospective, longitudinal study of BPD, which began in the early 1990s, is expected to reveal how treatment affects the course of the illness.
