Overview of Frontal Lobe Seizures
Frontal lobe epilepsy is the second most common type, after temporal lobe epilepsy. It is type of focal seizure and characterized by recurrent seizures taking place from the frontal lobes of brain. Seizures that start in the front of the brain may produce symptoms which are linked with psychiatric problem or a sleep disorder. It may produce weakness and also inability to use muscle that we use to speak. Seizures may occur from various part of the frontal lobe such as frontopolar, opercular, dorsolateral, supplementary motor area, motor cortex, orbitofrontal. Simple partial and complex partial are seizures types. Frontal lobe seizures are of very short time usually less than 1 minute, and take place in clusters.
What are the symptoms of frontal lobe seizures?
- Difficulty in speaking, laughing and in rare cases crying may occur.
- Head may turn on one side.
- Some cyclic movements of arms and legs may do by patients.
- Depending on type of seizures and patients, patients may or may not be aware for his abnormal behaviors.
- Arms may become stiff and extend upward.
What are the causes of frontal lobe seizures?
- Tumors, Vascular malformations, Encephalitis, Head trauma are responsible to cause Frontal lobe epilepsy.
- Autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy may be caused by an abnormal gene.
Treatments for frontal lobe seizures
Frontal lobe epilepsy is not very easy to diagnose. Brain scans, Electroencephalogram (EEG), Video EEG tests are used to diagnose the Frontal lobe epilepsy.
- Many times medicine can control disease but surgery is second option if anti-seizure drugs fail.
- Multiple subpial transections, Corpus callosotomy or the vagal nerve stimulation are other available option for treating Frontal lobe epilepsy.
- To control seizure avoid drinking excessive amount of alcohol. Sufficient sleep may reduce the problem.
