Cymbalta and weight gainThe investigative antidepressant duloxetine (Cymbalta )has no clinically meaningful effects on body weight in most patients, researchers reported at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). "The most important implication of this research, which combines several studies, is that, overall, the effect of duloxetine is weight neutral," said Robert Brannon, MD, clinical research physician, Eli Lilly Laboratories, Indianapolis, Indiana. The investigators pooled data from seven double-blind, placebo-controlled trials in which 1,032 patients were given duloxetine 40 mg/day to 120 mg/day and 732 received placebo. Patients were treated for up to 12 weeks. The investigators also analyzed data from a 12-month, open-label, single-arm study of 1,282 patients. Patients receiving duloxetine in the placebo-controlled trials lost approximately 0.5 kg, compared with a gain of 0.2 kg for placebo subjects (p<0.001). The incidence of decreased appetite was significantly greater for duloxetine patients (6.5 percent) compared to placebo patients (2.1 percent), as was the incidence of decreased body weight (1.7 percent vs. 0.6 percent). The incidence of increased appetite was lower for duloxetine patients (1.2 percent vs. 1.5 percent), and the incidence of increased body weight was significantly lower for duloxetine patients (0.3 percent vs. 1.2 percent). In the open-label study, mean change to end point for duloxetine patients was 1.12 kg (p<0.001). The research was supported by Eli Lilly and Company.
