Trileptal Drug Information (mood stabilizer)

     

Active Ingredient:  oxcarbazepine

Brand Name: Trileptal ®

Strength(s): 150mg, 300mg, 600 mg & 300mg/5mL oral suspension

Trileptal or Oxcarbazepine is an anti-epileptic drug (AED) which is very similar in chemical structure and activity to Tegretol. Tegretol (carbamazepine) is still a reasonable choice because as generic carbamazepine it's quite a bit cheaper than Trileptal. 

Uses of Trileptal medicine:

Trileptal is a medicine to treat partial seizures in adults. Trileptal is widely used for neuropathic pains of all types It is taken alone or with other seizure medicines. Taken with other seizure medicines, Trileptal is also used to help treat partial seizures in children 4-16 years old.

Trileptal also be effective in treating conditions as varied as mood disorders like anxiety, depression and Bipolar Disorder, sleep disorders, preventing migraine headaches and reducing chronic, neuropathic pain. You may also see out Bipolar disorder trileptal.

This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How to Take Trileptal tablet:

Take trileptal medicine as directed. It can be taken with or without food. Do not stop taking this medicine abruptly without consulting with your doctor.

Side Effects of Trileptal:

Warnings for Trileptal:

  • Trileptal can cause low levels of sodium in the blood. Signs of low levels of blood sodium include nausea, extreme drowsiness and discomfort, headache, confusion, or dullness, which can be dangerous. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medications that may lower the level of sodium in your blood. Medications that lower sodium include:
    • carbamazepine (Tegretol)
    • chlorpropamide (Diabinese)
    • cyclophosphamide
    • diuretics (water pills)
    • octreotide
    • vincristine
  • Trileptal can cause allergic reactions. If you have had an allergic reaction to other anti-seizure medicines, especially carbamazepine (Tegretol), tell your health care provider.
  • Talk to your health care provider before stopping Trileptal or any other seizure medicine. Stopping a seizure medicine all at once can cause status epilepticus, a serious problem.

What to do if you take Overdose of Trileptal?

Seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center.

What to do if you take Missed Dose of Trileptal?

Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How to Store Trileptal:

Keep Trileptal medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of the reach of children. Store trileptal at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

My six year old daughter was stared on Trileptal today. She has had 3 seizures. I'm so concerned about school and will she be drowsy in class after taking her morning dosage. - celien
