Suffering from Aviophobia - Flying Phobia?

What is Aviophobia (flying phobia)?

Aviophobia or Aviatophobia - Fear of flying.

Flight phobia is a fairly common condition that may affect as many as ten per cent of the population, with others reporting a lower level of anxiety and avoidance of flying whenever possible. It is evident that in the modern world of today, inability to cope with flying is a major disadvantage, especially for those whose work demands a great deal of travelling.

On an everyday level, sufferers of flight phobia miss out on the opportunities for travel and holidays that, in the Western world at least, people now take for granted.

Symptoms of Aviatophobia

Flight phobia can accompany both claustrophobia and agoraphobia or exist entirely as a separate specific condition. Surveys have shown that more women than men are affected, with about seventy per cent of sufferers being female, and that the condition typically develops in young adulthood during the late twenties.

Studies that have compared primary agoraphobics with secondary flight phobia to purely specific flight phobics have revealed some interesting differences concerning the nature and focus of the fear involved. Over seventy per cent of specific flight

Treatment of Aviatophobia

Studies indicate that graduated exposure, along with discussion and challenges to the negative cognitions attached to flying, is probably the most useful treatment for flight phobia. In practice, however, this is difficult to implement with the result that many therapists resort to indirect methods such as systematic desensitisation employing the person's imagination (that is, recreating in the mind the feared experiences of flying) and, possibly, film or video material. Also, the therapist will often instruct the person in relaxation techniques and methods of coping with his feared cognitions, or attempt to alter these by discussion.
