The essence of Darwinian evolutionary theory is that slight changes in biological features, which are themselves determined by genes, can arise by chance in individuals of a species. If such a change gives an individual a slight advantage, it is likely to be successful in breeding and to pass the characteristic on to its offspring. Over a period of time, increasing numbers of individuals will come to possess the changed characteristic, as long as it continues to be advantageous and this is known as adaptation.
