In recent years, a considerable amount of research in clinical psychology has been devoted to attempting to explain why human beings should be afflicted by phobias. Psychologists have formulated various theoretical models for the development of phobias and have attempted to test the validity of their theories by conducting controlled experiments with phobic people in a clinical setting.
