Phobia occurs at the extreme end of a sliding scale which passes down through unreasonable, but less crippling fear, to aversion and strong dislike. If these responses are taken into consideration, most people would probably admit that they have experienced phobic symptoms to a certain extent, even if only on a single occasion.
In fact, surveys have shown that sixty per cent of people have been affected by a phobia at some stage in life and that nearly all respondents are acquainted with at least one person who displays phobic symptoms.
