Fear of being seen or stared at.
Any attempt to account for phobias has to try and explain why fear of spiders, snakes, heights, enclosed spaces, water, crowds, storms, blood, and social gatherings should be so much more prevalent than fear of, for example, cows, rocks or electricity.
Some of the 'unconscious' models can further be considered to operate on the (human) species as a whole, as well as working at an individual level. These include some of those which fall under the broad umbrella of evolutionary ('biological') models.
