Do You Suffer From Cheimaphobia

What is Cheimaphobia?

Cheimaphobia or Cheimatophobia- Fear of cold.(Frigophobia, Psychophobia)

Specific phobias involving the natural environment form a broad group encompassing a wide range of phobic stimuli. These include snow, cold, landscape features such as forests and woodlands, caves and caverns and also natural water - the sea, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, whirlpools, etc. A further category includes climatic or weather phenomena such as storms (thunder and lightning), fog, rain, hail or snow. It is possible for almost any feature of the natural environment to be the subject of phobic fear, especially among children.

Development of Cheimaphobia

Consideration of natural environment phobias invites a closer look at two aspects: the nature of the phobic fear and the reasons behind the development of these phobias. A key factor in phobia is that the fear induced is irrational and out of proportion to any danger presented by the stimulus.

However, it cannot be denied that some natural environment phenomena that can be the cause of phobia are dangerous and hence some degree of fear seems understandable. The obvious candidate is a storm involving forked lightning. Although thankfully a rare event, someone is killed in Britain due to a direct lightning strike nearly every year, while others may suffer death or injury indirectly through trees or parts of buildings being struck and falling on them. Knowing these dangers, very few people would choose to remain in the open during a storm and would admit to feeling some degree of apprehension in such circumstances.
