The alternative name of the vascular dementia is multi-infarct dementia. The vascular dementia is most common type of dementia after the alzheimer dementia. It is a degenerative cerebrovascular disease which causes to the progressive refuse in memory and cognitive functioning. It causes due to blockage of blood supply inside the brain which carry oxygen and nutrients.

Generally is causes to the people having age between the 60 to 75. Mostly it is common in men than women. It has high mortality rate. t increases with age. In America 15% people causes vascular dementia.

Causes of Vascular Dementia

  • Vascular dementia causes because of disruption of blood flow to the brain which causes to the death of the brain cell.
  • Vascular dementia causes due to damage of vascular system which can not provide sufficient amount of blood supply to the brain cells.
  • vascular dementia cause to the cortical and subcortical damage to the brain.
  • VD causes due to thickening and hardening of the walls of vessels and narrowing of the lumen of the vessels which can leads in a reduction of blood flow to brain area supplied by the affected artery.
  • VD also causes due to accumulation of cholesterol.
  • Radiation therapy to the head leads to vascular dementia.
  • Subcortical vascular dementia damage to the nerve cell fibres of the brain which insulates nerve fibres in the brain.

What are Risk factors for Vascular Dementia?

  • Stroke history
  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart problems

Symptoms of Vascular Dementia

  • Difficulty with organization and solving complex problems
  • Memory problem.
  • Rapid walking.
  • Balance to the body and movement problems.
  • Personality and mood changes.
  • Unable to carry out daily activities.
  • Confusion.
  • Difficulty in speech.
  • Patient experiences hallucinations.
  • Delusions.
  • Problem in following instructions.
  • Urinary frequency.

Diagnosis of Vascular Dementia

The diagnosis of the VD take place with the help of following screening technique.

  • Computerized tomography - It consist of X-ray equipment to show the slice or tissue of body. For doing CTs of the head, you should need to remove earrings, eyeglasses, dentures, dental implants and hairpins.It is painless technology. The doctors select different test according to the different risk factors. It help to find out the abnormalities of the brain's blood vessel.

  • Magnetic resonance imaging - In this technology radio waves are used to produce the image. It is also painless technology. It produce noise at the time of operation. Contract material is used to produce more clear image.

  • Doppler ultrasound - In this doppler ultrasound technology high frequency sound waves are used to measure the direction and speed of blood cell which are travels inside the blood vessels. It help to find out the blockage of blood vessels in brain.

  • Neuropsychological Test - The neuropsychological tests take little minutes. These exams help to test orientation, recall, attention, calculation and language

Treatment of Vascular Dementia

There is no treatment available to approved vascular dementia.

  • The treatment consist of control the risk factors such as high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking and alcoholism.
  • The high blood pressure and high cholesterol can be treated by using medication and regular exercise.
  • The antiplatelet therapy is helpful in reducing the stroke.

Prevention of Vascular Dementia

  • Keep your blood pressure in normal form.
  • Keep the diabetes in normal range by taking proper diet.
  • Avoid smoking which causes the hardening of arteries.
  • Avoid excess drinking of alcohol.
  • Regular exercise must be necessary.
  • Take Cholesterol lowering medication.
  • Take proper message.

Prognosis of Vascular Dementia

The mortality rate of VD is greater than the Alzheimer. The prognosis can be improved by taking treatment and prevention. It causes death due to some complication of dementia.
