Segmented sleep - Facts and Meaning

Segmented sleep is something which refers to sleeping in two or more segments instead of one long sleep. It is not valid in current times, but it was present with our ancestors. It is not healthy for most people in today's world.

Segmented sleep is a necessity for many people today, although it is not considered healthy. For new parents, shift workers, people who are busy, getting sleep of 8 hours in a stretch is not possible and irregular sleep is a big problem for them. Segmented sleep is something which they retort to at the end. Segmented sleep is a sleeping pattern in which the night sleep of 8 hours is divided into two separate segments or chunks. There is a period of wakefulness in between sleeps.

There are lot of studies which has been conducted to show that consistent sleep of 7 to 8 hours each night is very vital ingredient for long and healthy life. Although this 8 hours is not typical number. There are people who are fine with just 5-6 hours or sleep while others need 9-10 hours of sleep. Sleep recharges the brain and the body both.

Disadvantages of Segmented Sleep

Sleep is like a debt. You need to get 8 hours of sleep every night. If you lack sleep one day, you need to complete it the next day by compensating it with additional sleep. Keep yourself out of debt and improve your health.

Points to consider for Segmented Sleep

Consistency is the key, when it comes to Sleeping. The healthy saying of the old times, "Early to bed, Early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise" is now changed to adapt to new saying - Early to bed, Early to rise, with waking time in between, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.

The fundamental sleep architecture of a person changes if he or she opts for segmented sleeping. All humans, animals, insects and birds have biological clocks inside themselves. This clock is controlled by genetics, proteins, etc. This clock varies as per the cycle of dark and light because of Earth's rotation and its titled axis. The primary physiological, neural and behavioural cycles are driven according to this circadian rhythm of 24-hour cycle. It affects all the things from mood, apetite, performance, strength, lethargy, action, etc.
