What is Abdominal Migraine?

Abdominal Migraine is also known as periodic syndrome, Childhood Cyclic Vomiting. Abdominal migraine is an idiopathic disorder seen mainly in children between the age of 5-9 years old and more common in female than male. The attak of Abdominal Migraine occurs at ant time but frequently first thing in the morning on waking which lasts for 1 to 72 hours. It is mainly located in the upper mid-abdomen.

Symptoms of Abdominal Migraine

  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Flushing
  • Anorexia
  • Phonophobia - sensitivity to sound
  • Slowing of pulse rate

How to treat Abdominal Migraine?

  • Abortive medicines like Imitrex, Zomig, Maxalt, are recommended.
  • Simple analgesicmedicines may be useful in relieving attacks.
  • Low doses of tricyclic antidepressants and flunarizine, a calcium channel blocker, should also be given.
