Serotonin (SHT) agonists
Serotonin agonists are used when attacks occur.
How they work
They increase the action of serotonin - a neurotransmittor - on blood vessel walls and in the brain. This causes vasoconstriction and increases clotting. It relieves the painful vaso-dilation of migraine.
Brandnames
. Sumatriptan - also known as Imigran
. Naratriptan, Rizatriptan, Zolmitriptan are new variants of this preparation.
Disadvantages
Serotonin agonists can reduce blood flow to heart muscle and raise blood pressure. They cause drowsiness at the beginning of treatment.
